Desert Spring Humidifier
There is a great find in humidifiers that a lot of people don’t know or think about. That find is called the Desert Spring Humidifier.
This humidifier doesn’t waste any water at all and it will suffer much less from hard water limitations from any other system that is out there. The Desert Spring humidifier still uses a reservoir of water like the standard humidifiers but instead of absorptive pads it instead utilizes a plastic disk.
The plastic disks are in the shape of an accordion and rotated through the water. What happens is the water will coat the disks and then evaporates into the air passing around 15 sq ft of surfaced area which is provided by those disks. The mineral deposits that come from hard water will wash off of the disks and then collect in a reservoir in order to be drained off. The Desert Spring Humidifier comes with a screw knob which is at the bottom of the reservoir which you can even attach to a garden hose ball valve in order to drain the unit easily into a bucket. You should do this about every month or so, at this timeframe it should be more than enough.
The humidifier connects through the cool input and the hot output of your furnace. Some of the hot air production of the furnace is redirected through the plastic water coated disks and into the input side of the furnace. From there a float valve inside the unit maintains the water at the prescribed level.
There are standard water pipe pierces that come with the unit. These are like the ones that you’d have on the freezer’s icemaker which tap into the cold water pipe in order to make the ice. They usually provide plastic tubing but you can replace it with a ¼” copper tubing to get something a little stronger.
The unit is pretty impressive as it is very well made, comes with a good installation documents and a video. It’s recommended that you watch the video before you start to install. You could get it installed without the video but you’re going to be able to save yourself some time especially if you’re not as inclined on this type of installation.
Desert Spring humidifiers use limited amounts of electricity and water so you’re going to save on your utility bills over time compared to another humidifier type. There aren’t any charges or pads that require changing so your extended costs are virtually non-existent.
You should make sure that you’re draining the reservoir monthly or use the auto flush device that comes with the unit, recommended. One other thing that you should do is wipe out the reservoir and rinse off the plastic disks at the beginning of the season.
If you’re in the market for buying or replacing a humidifier the Desert Spring Humidifier is one that you can’t go wrong with. If you do some searching online you’ll be able to get a great deal. The one consideration that you should make is that while you’re going to be spending a little more for this unit it is going to pay for itself over time as you’re not going to have to continually replace pads or filters like you do with other humidifier units.
