Cigar Humidifier

With a cigar humidifier storing your cigars can be as easy as it gets and not nearly as expensive as you might think that it is. The only costly feature is going to be buying the expensive cigars to put in it.

You can keep the cigars in either a humidor or just the standard plastic cooler. One of the options is for a Spanish cedar lining for the cooler but you really are just better off without it. You can just use an empty cigar box or purchase one from a cigar shop in order to easily store your loose or bundled cigars.

If you are going to be storing your cigars on a long-term basis you need to make sure that you’re keeping the humidity levels at around 60-65%. The best way to do this is through purchasing a cigar humidifier. This humidity level is going to be good for the short-term smoking storage as well. There are some people that will prefer a little more humidity and store their cigars at 60-70% instead of the standard 60-65%. What this is going to depend on really is just the quality of the tobacco as well as your personal smoking habits.

Hygrometer Calibration

For hygrometer calibration you should fill a soda bottle cap about half full using an un-iodized sea salt. After that you should just put in enough water to make sure to get the salt wet. You don’t want to use too much water as you’re not looking to form a solution just have the salt wet.

After you’ve done this put the cap into a small freezer baggie along with the hygrometer. Leave it in there until the meter stops moving. This will usually be a day or two. You should make sure that you’re putting it in a freezer baggie as the sandwich ones have imperfections and will allow airflow. After the meter has stopped moving you can adjust it to 75% humidity and you’re finished with the calibration.

Ongoing Humidification

When it comes to ongoing humidification you can use water and sponges which is a cheap way to humidify but it really isn’t the best. The best thing to do is purchase a cigar humidifier or the humidity packs you can purchase. This is the best way to make sure that you’re keeping your investment right at the humidity level that you want it at.

For the humidity packs they can last you around six months. This is going to be dependent on how often you’re opening up your humidor. Also despite the “don’t immerse in water” warnings you can actually do that and recharge them to extend their life.

Cellophane Wrapping

Cellophane wrapping isn’t airtight and it’s eventually going to pass enough humidity to be able to keep your cigars at the proper level. The one thing that they do is protect the fragile cigar wrappers from damage and it’s easy enough to either crumble or split the cigar wrapper even if you’re only rummaging through the case infrequently.
